How would you feel if you were demanded to give back to the community in your senior year of HS? Would you feel like what you are doing is an assignment, would you mind, would it be an issue for you?

This may be a problem for some people because yes, they want to volunteer, but they do not want to be told how to spend their time. Some people are annoyed by community service, so they refuse choose not to, I mean what is the point of forcing someone to do something they don’t want to do, it would be an honest effort.

Personally, I do not mind volunteering. If it is something I really enjoy, like helping out with children or trying to make a difference of course, I will be there. However, I do not want someone to tell me how to spend my time. At the end of the day, it is my choice.

What do you think?

I'd do it, depending what.

I agree, why force people to do things they don't want to? Only makes them resent the governemnt more. Same thing with the army. A voulenteer is worth 10 conscripts because the latter would drop their weapons and run away the first chance they got.

It should be fully free-will based. If they don't want to do it, why bother to force them?

Yeah community service shouldn't be forced, we don't want is for kids our age to feel pressured or resent service and grow up with that feeling. It should be part of civic education, peace education, it should be fostered and encouraged in the classroom and there our passion and interest should be sparked, we should feel inspired and modivated to do service or anything. From there we can have a future of citizens who are inspired by civic engagement and will inspire others to take action by their own terms to do something, no matter how small, every action counts. That day hopefully soon would be amazing :]

Hi All,

Though i'm based in South Africa, reading your posts inspires me a lot. The issue of volunteerism is very important in building a prosperous society. Indeed it may appear as if young people don't want to partake in community work that won't remunerate them in retrun, but i honestly think that with inspiring leadership the youth can understand and value the rewards that come with volunteerism and giving back to our respective communiities.

As a citizen of a developing country and someone who works in the media industry, i've made it my duty to educate and create as much awareness about hthe importance of active citizenship. I've since discovered that many of my peers dont actually get the concept of active citizenship, especially if it's politicians who preach it, but the response we've been getting as a non-partisan organisation has been overwhelming. I guess it's the language we use, which is simple and understood by everyone, compared to the confusing jargon used by our politicians.

On Wednesday, South Afrcans will be heading to the polls to cast their ballots for the fourth time in a democratic dispensation and what is so inspiring is that young people will come out in their droves and i always tell my peers that that's the first step of active and responsible citizenship.

I know i've digressed a bit, but i totally agree with you Shanda, forcing someone to do something he/she's reluctant to do wont yield anything positive results. We are all adults and are able to make our own decisions. People must rather concentrate at making sure that youth participation is prioritised in all decision making processes, instead of giving out orders on what we should.

Giving back is the most rewarding activity i can think of,whether u christian, jew or muslim ,giving back ought to be something we dont have to think twice about. One ought not be told or even asked to VOLUNTEER it should come VOLUNTARLY ,therefore personaly id do it just becoz giving back gives me a sense of joy... But again one should not be told to VOLUNTEER... I now feel obliged to leave you with this biblical quote 'GIVE AND IT SHALL BE GIVEN TO YOU' JD
